Captian Kelsey Comes to Madison
Madison
315-893-7910
towpath@twcny.rr.com
Join the Chenango Canal Association in its first fund-raiser of the year at a unique live history entertainment, silent auction and dinner at the Madison Historical Museum on South Street, Madison at 5:00 pm. Michele Henry plays "Captain Kelsey", who plies the Chenango Canal after the Civil War with tandem grain boats, each 96 feet long, carrying 200 tons of grain from Norwich to New York City. Life on a canal boat constantly moves through the state and some very exciting times. The Captain has a variety of stories to tell involving ghosts, runaway hoggees, horse thieves, fugitive slaves, abolition and women’s rights. History comes to life in this interactive performance as the Captain interviews the audience for a new hoggee to drive the mules along the Erie towpath. Just what is expected of a hoggee anyway? Michele Henry can tell you. “Captain Kelsey” is a first person historic interpretation performed by Mrs. Henry. Since 1993 she has been performing at Chittenango Landing Canal Boat Museum as well at Syracuse’s Erie Canal Museum and other historical locations. Join the Captain for a fine blend of history and humor with a dash of creativity that kids from 9 to 99 will enjoy. An entertaining evening, including an Italian dinner is $15. Call 315-893-7910 to register or email towpath@twcny.rr.com by May 14.
