Presbyterian Homes & Services, Inc. was established in 1962 when the Utica Presbytery investigated the possibility of building a nursing home for elderly Presbyterians in need of convalescent, rehabilitative and/or nursing care. Today, it has surpassed this need and has gone far beyond the dreams of its founders.
On June 1, 1967, the first resident was admitted to Presbyterian Home for Central New York, and by September 1967, the facility was full. Expansion was necessary and plans were underway to create today’s 242-bed facility.
In 1986, upon realizing its success in skilled nursing care, plans surfaced for a special needs unit to serve those with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. Dovetailing with our special needs unit, an adult day health care program opened in 1988. This program provides all of the facility’s services to individuals who are able to reside in the community.
After review and careful consideration of residents’ special needs, the Parkinson’s residence opened in 2001 to serve those afflicted with Parkinson’s disease and other movement disorders. This residence is one of the first in the nation located in a skilled nursing facility, and serves as a model in individual care and treatment of patients with Parkinson’s disease and other movement disorders.
