Magic Valley Electric Coop, established in 1937, is an electric distribution cooperative that serves portions of five counties: Cameron, Hidalgo, Willacy, Kennedy and Starr. The co-op serves 83,000 meters and covers 2600 square miles of service area. Based in Mercedes Texas, MVEC has the third largest membership of sixty-six electric cooperatives located in the State of Texas.
Magic Valley is a non-profit, member-owned cooperative. Co-ops are owned by the people they serve, not shareholders. This means that co-op management makes decisions based on direct benefit to members, not profitability. Like private utilities, we use the power of numbers to buy electricity and equipment at the lowest possible price. Unlike them, we pass our savings on to our members.
Magic Valley Electric Cooperative, Inc. has mailed 80,000 checks totaling over 1.40 million dollars to MVEC members/ owners. Depending on electricity usage, checks ranging from less than than one dollar to several thousands of dollars will be received by MVEC consumers. Over the last 15 years, over 19 million dollars have been returned to MVEC's members/owners. The accumulation of capital credits represents the member's share of ownership in the cooperative.
MVEC continues to support the youth of our area by awarding scholarships and supporting our youth tour. Demonstrating the co-ops's commitment to education, scholarships are awarded to graduating seniors in our service area each year.
MVEC is accepting applications from high school sophomores and juniors, in the co-op's service area, to win an all paid expense paid trip to Washington, D.C., this summer. MVEC co-sponsors a tour of Washington, D.C, it's monuments, the Capitol, Smithsonian Institute, and other historical and political sites. This years delegates from our local area will join over 120 delegates from Texas. Together, they will visit important landmarks as they travel to our nation's capitol, where they will join over 1200 delegates from across the nation.
